1. Project Summary and Goals

Set of Hope offers film acting workshops to crisis-affected communities that foster healing, skill-building, and empowerment. The Set of Hope website was particularly unique since it is a non-profit organization, as opposed to a typical alternative health and wellness business. Despite this, the non-profit’s mission is specifically intended to improve the overall well-being of its participants.

The goal and challenge of this project were to create branding and a website that clearly identified it as a non-profit while emphasizing and communicating the wellness benefits of its film acting workshops.

2. Color Palette

The color palette for the Set of Hope website and brand revolves around red and white. Red was chosen as the primary brand color to reflect qualities like warmth, passion, and compassion, which are key qualities of the non-profit. White was selected as the other main brand color to provide a nice visual contrast to the red and to symbolize qualities like peace and healing that Set of Hope strives to promote.

Other colors utilized in the website include a barely off-white shade and a mid shade of blue. The off-white color was used for the background on each page to give a subtle sense of warmth, and the mid blue shade was selected to make the primary call-to-action button visually stand out throughout the site.

3. Fonts

The two fonts selected for the website are Playfair Display and Fira Sans, with Playfair Display being used for headers and Fira Sans for body text. Playfair Display was chosen for its refined and classy character, which expresses Set of Hope’s professional nature and is reminiscent of fonts found in acting scripts. Fira Sans was chosen to complement Playfair Display because the structure of its letters is very similar to Playfair Display’s, making them a good pairing. Additionally, as a sans serif font, Fira Sans ensures body text is easy to read.

4. Logo

For the Set of Hope logo, we consciously chose to go abstract rather than relying solely on more literal and typical symbols like a film camera or a strip of film. The red square with the inner white square outline is meant to be an abstract representation of a camera lens, with the colors red and white symbolizing passion, compassion, and healing. The film canister replacing the “o” in “hope” was included to clearly convey the film acting nature of the non-profit. Stan preferred the Set of Hope name to be in all lower case, which communicates the fun nature of its film acting workshops.

5. Images

Given that Stan had a lot of quality photos from Set of Hope’s inaugural workshops, we decided to utilize these throughout the website as much as possible. Even when using photos not taken by Set of Hope, we ensured they were high-quality and had a similar visual style to the Set of Hope photos. We also added a white outline inside almost every image to add visual interest and continue the abstract camera lens motif found in the Set of Hope logo.

6. Copywriting

The information for the website copywriting was gathered during the in-depth strategy session conducted before the project began. MindBody Digital’s owner, Tyler, and Stan collaborated closely on writing the site’s content, ensuring everything was concise, detailed, and accurate. Tyler meticulously proofread every final draft to ensure the content was consistent and free of errors.

7. Other Design Elements

On the "Why Acting?" page of the Set of Hope site, four hand-drawn style icons were used to represent the benefits of acting outlined on that page. These icons were chosen specifically because they strike a delicate balance between showcasing the non-profit’s professional, friendly, and warm qualities. The inclusion of these icons helps to further illustrate and communicate the benefits of Set of Hope’s workshops.

“Since I operate more in the non-profit space, I struggled with how to position the work online through the site. This was especially true because my organization is still in its infancy.

Tyler was able to draw from his experience working in the alternative health and wellness space to position what we do in a similar vein while staying true to the very unique niche we occupy. This wasn’t an easy balance to strike, but he nailed it throughout the entire process.

My project now has a much more credible and professional presence than I ever thought I’d have this early. This will help a lot as we look for new partners and participants for our acting workshops.”
